Chapter Eleven

“Well, I think you got what you wanted.” Jane smacked her hand against the newspaper and read the headline out loud. “American journalist’s firsthand account of the Droppin Well Bombing. It’s your best work so far. I think even I busted a tear or two.”

Nancy put her hands on her hips, her lips pressed together in a grim expression. She didn’t look nearly as happy as Jane thought she should, considering her latest accomplishment. “I’m glad you think it’s good and my editor told me the same thing. But, apparently, it’s now too dangerous here for me, so they’re pulling me out of the country. They want me out of here before Christmas.”

As if to emphasize her point, Nancy picked up a jumper and flung it into the open suitcase on her bed.

“What?” Jane turned and folded the newspaper so she could give Nancy her full attention. “You can’t be serious.”

“I can. I’ve got less than two hours to collect my things and get on the plane. Isn’t that something? I give them blood, sweat, and tears, and now they think it’s too dangerous. Isn’t that the point? Let me tell you this, no one else is getting pulled out – not any of the men.” She injected venom into the last word and punctuated her statement by tossing another article of clothing into her suitcase.

“I agree, that’s not fair, and maybe the point isn’t how dangerous things are here.” Even though Jane wanted to understand Nancy’s frustration, something else tugged at her heart. Emptiness threatened to push aside the warm feelings of the past week, of shared nights in bed with the woman she’d come to care about more than anything in the world. Nancy was leaving again and there was nothing she could do to stop it.

Nancy faced her, lips quirking up slightly at the corners. “Well, let’s show those guys that they can’t keep a good journalist down. Come with me.”

“What are you on about?” The paper slid from Jane’s loose fingers, shuffling as it fell to the floor. Of all the things she expected Nancy to say, that wasn’t one of them.

“You heard me. Come with me. It’s dangerous here and you can’t stay alone. Besides, they’re flying me back to the States, and you can find better-paying work there.”

Jane scoffed and knelt to scoop up the newspaper. After learning how to hide her feelings, it was a gut-punch to see how easily she exposed them to Nancy. She’d have to relearn how to stay calm, cool, and collected. Once Nancy was gone, of course.

“I’m serious. Besides, it’s even more dangerous for you here. What if someone – anyone – saw you at the site of the bombing? You were right about that. With your father’s connections, they might wonder if you had anything to do with it.”

The suggestion left Jane frozen. “They’ve already determined it was the INLA after the IRA denied their involvement. Call them what you will, but at least the IRA would try to limit civilian casualties.
